I have the one main entrance door and 3 windows. Is there any way I can keep the heat in and the cold out during the winter? I would prefer not to have a high bill, but I would like to keep warm and not freeze myself out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
If your windows are crappy and your apartment is poorly insulated there isn’t much you can do that wouldn’t be extreme.
The easiest thing would probably be to get some duct tape and go to each window and where ever you feel a draft from the closed window cover the hole with duct tape. On the main door check how it seals on the bottom, usually that seal wears out pretty fast and is often the biggest leak, also check around the rest of the door to see if it seals well.
Heat only the rooms you use. Maybe heat only your bedroom and keep the bedroom door closed at all times, and if you need to go to the kitchen do so quickly and then go back to your room.
Beyond that all you can do is replace your windows and better insulate the walls, or take blankets and cover the windows with them, the entire opening, and over that put a layer of cardboard and then secure all that to the window with duct tape. Its extreme and fairly unpractical but if you really want to reduce the bill thats your only chance.
put plastic over the windows and hang a quilt or something like it to block the air when the door gets opened
You can have a secondary double glazing or use thick curtains. If you have a room that you do not use turn off the radiator and close the door.
When the heating is on avoid coming in and out of the main door as much as you can.
Wear thick cloths inside the house.
Adjust the room temperature just above the normal room temperature that way the boiler stops when it reaches that point.
I hope that helps.
Weather strips for windows and doors and a programmable thermostat will help.
