Which breeds are best for apartment living?

We’re looking for a dog that won’t eat our cat, doesn’t shed too much, and tolerates kids… Oh, and it has to be some-what small since we’re in an apartment.

  1. Miniature Schnauzers make great indoor dogs and they are extremely friendly towards children and everybody. They are small and ca play and get their exercise inside. They don’t shed too much but need to be groomed regularly. Downside is they are protective of their people and bark at everything. They get along great with other animals too.

  2. Shih-tzu’s are good. Very friendly dogs. They love to be around people. Their max weight for their breed limit is 15 Ib. Girls are much better behaved than boys…but if you insist on getting a boy neuter him or your cats life expectancy will probably drop about five years…

  3. Well I suggest a dog that is small not hyper because they will want to go outside alot, and that is not over protective so maybe a dashound they are cute freindly and small. Glad i could help!

  4. Breed size should not be the determining factor.it’s not so much size,as the energy level and exercise requirements of the breed.I’m not saying go out and get a 200 pound Mastiff, but don’t just consider it a size issue. The below site is excellent to use for some research. It gives breed size, temperament, exercise and grooming requirements, health problems the breed is prone tom,ore or less anything you need to know.

There is also an option to search breeds on how good they are with kids, other people and animals etc. Also has good care and training tips.

  5. Chihuahuas…thet are great housepets, require not much exercise and they can eliminate on weepads,of course they are also small and much fun(i own one) :) Chihuahua can do well with children if you raise them right and show small children how to handle them correctly ….it would be a good idea to get a puppy tho

  6. Chihuahuas don’t do well with kids. Greyhounds are great in apartments and with kids. Just some like to chase cats. If you get a rescue (I would suggest it) the rescue usually does tests to make sure they are good with cats.

  7. No dogs are suitable for keeping in an apartment unless you can walk it 4 times a day and let it run about on some open ground for at least an hour and interact with other dogs on a frequent basis

  8. Amazingy Italian Greyhounds are great apartment dogs. You would think with their physique, they would need to run alot, but they just lounge around and love to cuttle. They do not bite and hardly bark.
The downside to and Italian Greyhound is that they are very difficult to train because hey are just stubborn dogs. It will take anyone twice as long to potty train these dogs compared to any others.

  9. Read about the diffrent breeds at AKC.org no living situation or family is the same. Also you local ASPCA or all breed rescue will talk with you about your home and what you want from a dog and match you with the perfect dog for you.

  10. Retired racing greyhounds are wonderful small-space dogs. My family has 3 in a 1200 sq. foot condo, and we have a 4yo who gets along very well with them. They do need to be leash-walked at least twice a day but they are often called ‘45mph’ couch potatos because they sleep about 20 hours a day. Contact your local rescue group through http://www.greyhoundpets.org/ . They will be able to introduce you to some wonderful dogs and give you lots of information.
